◄ NEW DELHI: India’s two Olympic medalists and top shuttlers PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal won their respective women’s singles rubbers to set up a mouth-watering quarterfinal clash against each other at the India Open Super Series 2017 on Thursday.
◄ Saina cruised to a comfortable win against Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand to book last-eight berth. Looking in fine form, the 27-year-old Olympic bronze medalist won 21-14, 21-12.
◄ On the other hand, Sindhu was made to work hard for a win by her 19-year-old Japanese opponent Saena Kawakami.
◄ Sindhu began slowly in the first game before eventually gaining the momentum to pocket it 21-16. But an agile Kawakami gave her a tough fight in the next game, not allowing her easy points as she continued to keep the Olympic silver medallist on her toes.
◄ Sindhu’s experience ultimately came to the fore as she won 23-21.
